When the patio sits right outside the back door, a lean-to pergola gives you shade without four posts in the way. A wall ledger bolts to the house, two front posts carry the outer beam, and the rafters slope gently outward. Assembly: two adults, a ladder, a drill and a stud finder; plan on 4 – 5 hours. The ledger must be fixed into wall studs or a rim joist, not into siding alone. If you are unsure about your wall, ask a local handyman to fit the ledger.
Care: brush off leaves and rinse the canopy with mild soap. Retract the canopy before storms and store it indoors over winter in snowy regions so it lasts more seasons.
